Racist Slurs On Flight

On my flight back from New Orleans and the Essence Festival, I encountered the racist message scrawled inside one of the in-flight magazines. Scribbled on an ad were the words, “When you read Obama in this story, just say jig a boo instead.” The story’s article was about visiting sites in North Carolina. A few spaces underneath this racist retort the author had autographed it with one letter, “W”

These offensive remarks demonstrated how dangerous and influential is the racist rhetoric of the Tea Party, Mr. Paul, Mr. Williams and others who have publicly espoused racist speech, images and attitudes.

I was disturbed that someone felt so comfortable in writing these hateful remarks in a magazine that another passenger would read. There should be no doubt in anyone’s mind that there needs to be a collective outcry against bigotry and racist hate speech. I am thankful that the NAACP has decided to take the lead in this struggle.
