Perhaps Glenn Beck and Sarah Palin need to understand the reach of Martin Luther King’s historic call to civil rights and freedom for all Americans. Perhaps standing where he stood back in 1963 transfers some of the power of King’s words whch transcend time and even weak political campaigns. Truth knows no bounds and does not need Beck’s or Palin’s 21st century interpretations.
If they dare to quote King, then his words will once again ring true and compell all listeners to embrace civil rights and freedom for all. That would include embracing our president, Barack Obama, the first African American to ever hold the highest position in our government. Truly, he is the best example of King’s dream breaking through resistant barriers of hate and social inequality. And in his work Obama continues to promote and create programs that aid “the least of these” including health care and education reform and stimulus funds for jobs for all Americans.
King’s spirit lives on!! There is nothing that Beck, Palin and company can do to tarnish or appropriate it for their purposes. Dare they quote his words and stand in his shoes they may find themselves on the side of righteousness, and not Republican! King’s movement was a people’s movement. And Obama is the People’s president!!!

CFE calls for Recommitment to the Constitutional Right to a Meaningful High School Education and Targeted Investments in Strategies Proven to Achieve Academic Excellence

Statement by Geri Palast, CFE Executive Director

The continuing failure of our nation’s educational systems to focus the proper attention on the black male student population, particularly in New York State and City, underscores the need to provide adequate funding for targeted investments in the core, research-proven resources and practices. The Schott Foundation’s “Yes We Can” Report sounds the alarm and reinforces the solutions that the Campaign for Fiscal Equity litigation and subsequent legislation was designed to advance the constitutional right to a sound basic education. After a 13 year court battle, the State agreed to increase funding by $7 billion over four years. These precious dollars were to be distributed on the basis of need and targeted to strategies proven to advance student achievement. Unfortunately, our progress has been halted by deep budget cuts. Targeted investments and the constitutional guarantee of a meaningful high school education have been laid aside. This tragedy is underscored by the success of New Jersey’s Abbott plan won through similar litigation demonstrates that when equitable resources are available to all students, systemic change can result. New Jersey is the only state with a significant Black population with a greater than 65% high school graduation rate from Black male students.
For New York City, this bad news comes on the heels of another similar report by New York State report on the 2010 test scores. State officials reported what they considered a more accurate reading of students’ proficiencies. As a result, not only did passing rates drop for New York City but the previously hailed closing of the racial achievement gap largely disappeared.

Currently the New York State Regents are phasing out the use of local diplomas and requiring that every student must graduate with the college ready Regents diplomas reported on here. CFE is finalizing a report and recommendations addressing Regents diploma rates among disadvantaged students in New York City.

CFE urges New York State and City policymakers to renew their commitment to CFE principles and investments and to adopt the conditions for success that provide a proven opportunity to learn laid out in this report.

Yesterday, I enjoyed volunteering at the Organization For America’s Phone Bank at the West Harlem Democratic Club offices on Amsterdam Avenue. While I delivered the scripted message to new voters, I noticed that over 20 people came in to help. Each caller had a list of 40 “new” voters to call and ask them if they were committed to vote in the November 2nd election.
After finding that answer, we asked these voters, many who were registered Democrats, if they were going to support Congressman Bishop and State Senator Gillibrand. Many people were not home but I did connect with 6 voters out of my 44 who were committed to voting in 2012.
I plan to return to help again. -

On my flight back from New Orleans and the Essence Festival, I encountered the racist message scrawled inside one of the in-flight magazines. Scribbled on an ad were the words, “When you read Obama in this story, just say jig a boo instead.” The story’s article was about visiting sites in North Carolina. A few spaces underneath this racist retort the author had autographed it with one letter, “W”

These offensive remarks demonstrated how dangerous and influential is the racist rhetoric of the Tea Party, Mr. Paul, Mr. Williams and others who have publicly espoused racist speech, images and attitudes.

I was disturbed that someone felt so comfortable in writing these hateful remarks in a magazine that another passenger would read. There should be no doubt in anyone’s mind that there needs to be a collective outcry against bigotry and racist hate speech. I am thankful that the NAACP has decided to take the lead in this struggle.

We arrived in New Orleans the night before the Essence Music Festival began at the Convention Center. The next morning people filled the Morial Convention Center for music, group dances, performances, give-aways, a cultural bazaar of Afrocentric merchandise, book signings and the best food this side of the Mississippi. It looked like a procession heading into the main entrance and as I entered under the 40th Anniversary Essence archway I knew I was experiencing an expanded and rich display of talent, cultural expertise and beauty.
Later that night at the Superdome Charlie Wilson stopped to praise God in the middle of his reprise of his hits with the Gap Band. Janet. Janet. I had to say her name twice because she rocked the dome with her brilliant repertoire of hits and electric performance! More to come….

This year marks the 40th anniversary of Essence Magazine, a monthly journal dedicated to Black women, and Grammy award-winning performers, including Mary J. Blige, Gladys Knight, Alicia Keys, Jill Scott, LL Cool J and Earth, Wind and Fire, are returning to the Superdome in New Orleans to celebrate the occasion. Music icon and legend Janet Jackson in concert stands to be the once-in-a-lifetime event that headlines the recording artists at the three night music festival from July 2nd through the 4th.
Nephew Tommy from the Steve Harvey Show (WBLS radio) hosts the center stage concerts at the Dome that feature Janet Jackson commanding the main stage just after 11:00 until1:00 a.m. on Friday night. Keep in mind, however, that all concerts begin at 7:00. On Friday, July 2nd Monica kicks it off with her vocal power and signature sound followed by Raphael Sandiq, DJ Soul Sister, Charlie Wilson and closing with Jackson.
On Saturday night Keri Hilson starts the show. The headliners are a fantastic trio, with rapper LL Cool J, Gladys Knight and Alicia Keys treating the audience with their famously entertaining performances. The final concert on Sunday begins with Trey Songz followed by the incomparable Jill Scott, a two-time Festival artist; Mary J. Blige, a veteran Essence Festival star, and ending with the timeless band, Earth, Wind and Fire. For the first time Maze featuring Frankie Beverly will not close out the series.
On the Superlounge stages in the Dome rising and veteran r&b artists perform Friday through Sunday night. Among them are gospel duo Mary, Mary, Chrisette Michelle, New Orleans’’ own Big Sam’s Funky Nation and War on Friday night; on Saturday soul singer Joe, Mint Condition, and DeLa Soul; and Sunday’s roster features Lalah Hathaway, Estelle and Shamarr Allen and the Underdawgs.
The free Empowerment seminars at the Convention Center on Friday focuses on love and relationships. Panels range from “Black Men Uncensored: Part I. The Games, The Lies, The Truth” to “Informed and In Charge: Sex in the Era of HIV” with guest speakers and commentators, actor and author Hill Harper, Sheryl Lee Ralph, Kirk and Tammy Franklin, Steve Harvey, Lamman Rucker, Rodney and Holly Robinson Peete, Judge Penny Brown Reynolds and Dr. Celeste Watkins Hayes.
For the first time in Essence Fest history the singular focus of the Saturday sessions is education. Dr. Bill Cosby returns as a keynote speaker. An exemplary panel of experts discuss, “The State of Education.” With the new initiatives like charter schools, federal “Race to the Top” funds, and changing teacher evaluation and performance standards, black parents need to stay informed about their options for improving their children’s education. Among the panelists are Dr. Steve Perry, Dr. Julianne Malveaux, Bishop T.D. Jakes, NEA Secretary Rebecca Pringle, Dr. Andre Perry, actress and mother Jada Pinkett Smith and National Urban League president, Marc Morial.
Sunday’s program brings high praise and worship to the Convention Center through the concert performances of Marvin Sapp, Karen Clark Sheard, Pastor Shirley Caesar and Tye Tribett among others. An artist’s bazaar provides a rich collection of original paintings, sculptures, Afrocentric fashions, and jewelry available for purchase.

Every Sunday I turn to TV One and BET to watch Rev. Flake and other ministers deliver their Sunday message. Imagine my surprise when I received this e-mail from my daughter warning me of a campaign to remove pastor from television broadcasts.

Read the message below and spread the word. We can make this a united effort in keeping Christ’s message alive!

Pastors Removed From TV

Read all the way through, please…

Pastor Removal from Television

Removal of 20, including Joel Osteen, Joyce Meyer, Charles Stanley, David Jeremiah and other pastors from the airwaves.

An organization has been granted a Federal Hearing on the same subject by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) in Washington , D.C. Their petition, Number 2493, would ultimately pave the way to stop the reading of the gospel of our Lord and Savior, on the airwaves of America . They got 287,000 signatures to back their stand! If this attempt is successful, all Sunday worship services being broadcast on the radio or by television will be stopped..
This group is also campaigning to remove all Christmas programs and Christmas carols from public schools! You, as a Christian, can help!

We are praying for at least 1 million signatures. This would defeat their effort and show that there are many Christians alive, well and concerned about our country.. As Christians, we must unite on this.

Please don’t take this lightly. We ignored one lady once and lost prayer in our schools and in offices across the nation. Please stand up for your religious freedom and let your voice be heard. Together we can make a difference in our country while creating an opportunity for the lost to know the Lord.

Please, if you don’t wish to participate, return this email to whoever sent it to you so they can at least keep this email going or forward it to someone you know who will wish to participate. Dr. Dobson is going on CNBC to urge every Christian to get involved. I hope you will sign and forward to all your family and friends.. Please press forward, CLEAN UP THE MESSAGE, and forward this to everyone you think should read this…..

Now, please sign your name at the bottom (you can only add your name after you have pressed ‘Forward’ or you have copied and pasted the text).
Don’t delete any other names, just go to the next number and type your name. Please do not sign jointly, such as Mr. & Mrs., each person should sign his/her own name. Please defeat this organization and keep the light of our freedom of religion.

When you get to 1,000 please e-mail back to: Lisa Norman email address is:
